Can microwave be installed near an airport?

There's no problem installing microwave in the vicinity of an airport, provided that it's a high frequency transmission, which is typical of end-user systems. Low frequency, high power radios are a different matter, but then those are generally used by phone companies ("common carriers"), utilities and government agencies.

There are no regulations preventing the installation of end-user microwave links near airports. We've installed radios that transmit across and even within airports, such as at Austin International, Boston's Logan Airport and LAX. On the whole, airport frequency managers have little concern when it comes to the higher frequencies we use.

That's mainly due to the following factors: 1) Our power output is minimal (~60 milliwattts, 2) the signal is contained in a very narrow beam (1.5 to 2-degrees), and 3) our frequencies are far apart from those used by Instrument Landing Systems.

As part of the FCC license process, we notify airport managers in writing before installing a system within a quarter mile of a landing strip and in doing so we've never met with resistance.
