NO VENDOR HAS MORE EXPERIENCE. HERE'S WHY IT MATTERS...
David Theodore, Meridian President & Pioneer of Wireless Ethernet
If you don’t know a whole lot about wireless, then the best thing you can do is find a vendor with experience - the more the better. Brochures and vendor claims are always compelling, but wireless is far from an exact science and so vendor experience makes a huge difference.
At Meridian Microwave, we offer more than just the best wireless products. We offer the longest, must proven track record in the business. This is a big point, because you can buy the best wireless product sold on the market, but a great product is only half of it. Getting optimal performance from any radio is just as much about a solid path analysis, good frequency selection and a top-notch installation. Compromise in these areas and you'll have no end to headaches.
Wireless always looks great on brochures and in controlled lab tests, but what really counts is how it'll work for you, in your environment. System design and implementation is what we do best, all guided by the experience and resourcefulness of wireless WAN pioneer and Meridian president, David Theodore. David's contributions to the industry are well documented (
pre-Internet publications), and his work continues to be highly acclaimed by clients and industry leaders alike.
"David sees solutions that others overlook, and he delivers consistent results with professionalism and integrity."

LOOKING FOR A WIRELESS CONNECTION?
HERE'S SOME GUIDANCE THAT WE HOPE WILL HELP...
- If you need serious bandwidth, say better than 20-30 Mbps (ea. direction – “full duplex”), then look to point-to-point wireless, as opposed to point-multipoint or Wi-Fi type solutions. Point-to-point wireless is where all the bandwidth is at. Splitting the signal to serve other sites means divvying up the bandwidth as well.
- Point-to-point wireless comes in two flavors: license-exempt and FCC licensed (“microwave”). If you need better than 100 Mbps of bandwidth (again, full-duplex), then look at FCC licensed microwave (also, “point-to-point microwave”), and don’t be at all worried about the license part. The license is easy if you can pay the $3,695, and it’s good for an initial 10-years. The exception is the 60GHz band (“millimeter wave”), where 100 Mbps and gigabit rates are supported, but only for real short path distances (under ½ mile).
- If you’re in a major city and need a wireless link across town, then be prepared to pay a premium for a licensed microwave connection or roll the dice and bet that you’re not going to have interference in the shared 5GHz bands. The exception is if you’re blasting a signal across the street.
- For the best interference protection in the license-exempt class, look for “OFDM Modulation” in the specs.
- Believe published bandwidths for all licensed microwave, regardless of maker, but know that in the license-exempt class, bandwidth decreases a lot with distance and so be wary of the numbers. What starts as a 100 Mbps connection on a lab bench, turns out to be a mere fraction of that across 5, 10 or 20 miles.
- Avoid “hot-standby” configurations, which in most cases are a waste of money.

GETTING THE MOST FROM YOUR WIRELESS INVESTMENT
By David Theodore...
In the course of my career I’ve developed a strong sense of what works and what falls short, what features to look for and how to deal with path reflections, interference or other challenges that trip up other vendors. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve been called to clean up another vendor’s installation, but no one has ever had to fix one of ours.
Just this week (7/28/10), I took a call from the Dept. of Transportation about five links that were installed a couple of years ago and two have never performed as well as the others. Their vendor tried everything, but lacked the experience to bring the other two links up to snuff and eventually came up with a good enough excuse to cut bait. Apparently the DOT was fine enough with it because the microwave was a lot better than what they had before. In another case, we came into a project where a wireless vendor installed indoor rated metal conduit outside some buildings in lower Manhattan and after a year the pipes were rusting and pulling off the walls, not to mention that some of the mounts were jury-rigged and inadequate for the size dishes they were holding. These things are just unacceptable, and they don’t happen in our world.
We treat every customer application like it’s our own; never compromising on the details. We work hard so that every client’s experience leads to the best type of business – repeat business. When it comes to customer satisfaction and performance, we’re in it for the long haul.
Meridian Microwave provides engineering, installation and support services throughout the East Coast and may partner with qualified installers in other U.S. regions.
